Latest update from Truespeed (200Mbps broadband)
Most of the engineering work in Leigh is done. However, we are still awaiting wayleaves from a few landowners. This is delaying the project as we can’t complete our network build and connect Leigh until we can access the land in question. My best estimate is that this has delayed the Leigh on Mendip and Tadhill connection date until May.
I am sorry about the delay. We will endeavour to keep you informed as things develop. Neil Rogers is now the lead on Community Engagement for Leigh on Mendip and the surrounding area.

The Parish Council would like help to find the owner of the “Drang” footpath which runs between the church and Bellfield.

Although it is a Public Right of Way, the ownership of the land is unknown. We have confirmed that it is not owned by Somerset County Council or Mendip District Council or recorded by Land Registry. Our next stage is to enquire locally.

For many years we have relied on neighbours and other volunteers for its upkeep but our aim is to ensure that the path is maintained (by the landowner). If no owner can be found the Parish Council will endeavour to register ownership and take on responsibility for the maintenance.

If you have any knowledge or property documents which may indicate who owns the “Drang” please contact myself by email, phone or letter.

 Many thanks for your help

Chris Cudmore

The community café in the church is reopening for 2019 on Wednesday 9th January (9am to 4pm Monday-Friday) with very reasonably priced refreshments.  When no-one is present, please feel free to go in and serve yourself.

Please take the time to visit our new community facilities. We look  forward to seeing you.

New email address details for this website are at Publishing Information . Use this for Guest Book entries and to advertise your Leigh on Mendip events and businesses etc.

There has been a recent dramatic increase in dog fouling of the pavements, footpaths and other public spaces. This is Anti-Social Behaviour and gives all dog walkers a bad name.

PLEASE remove dog poo immediately. If you don’t want to take it home, there are two dog waste bins on the Rec Field and one next to the Memorial Hall.

Please look out for the culprits and remind them of their lapses. It’s probably just a small number of thoughtless people making life difficult for everyone else.

17Jan2018 Parish Council

The Parish Council is pursuing an opportunity for two additional Affordable Houses (for Social/Affordable Rent) in the village. Funding is available but only for three years, after that the funds will be made available to adjacent parishes. However we need to achieve three things:-
1.    to demonstrate there is a need.
2.    to identify sites (either new build or sale of existing)
3.    for a Housing Association to agree to manage them (“take them on”)

To demonstrate the need, anyone who has a local connection and has a housing need should register with the Homefinder Somerset Choice Based Lettings (CBL) scheme. Further details and a link to the scheme are here.

You are not committing to anything by registering but you will be allowing Mendip District Council to asses the potential need and hopefully agree to increasing the Affordable Housing stock in our village.

Criteria to register on the Homefinder Somerset Choice Based Lettings (CBL) scheme can be found in the Homefinder Somerset Common Lettings Policy.

Volunteers have already made a difference.

How can you help?

The Parish Council is looking for volunteers to help look after our footpaths, primarily any minor pruning if necessary and reporting any significant access issues to the Parish Path Liaison Officer (Parish Councillor David Sparkes), who can then liaise with Somerset Rights of Way. To identify a footpath and stile which you may like to "adopt" click here. We've had a good response so far but there are still some left! See the current list here. Note that it is the responsibility of the landowner to maintain Rights of Way.

A handy website for reporting problems to both Somerset and Mendip Councils (fly tipping, street lights, pavement, pot holes etc). See what has already been reported.  The site automatically sends a report to the relevant authority. Don't just talk about it - report it at fixmystreet . You can still report directly to the Councils (details are on the "Village Services" page).

Anyone can join, just click on this link to Facebook
